Volunteer of the Month: Bella Sanchez Associate RGD

Interview with Bella Sanchez Associate RGD, ZAK

This March, the RGD thanks Bella Sanchez Associate RGD for her contributions to the RGD community.

Q: How long have you been volunteering with the RGD, and in what capacity?

I’ve been volunteering with the RGD since 2021 — back when I was a bright-eyed design student just starting to explore the vast world of graphic design. Like many students, I first dipped my toes into the community by joining the RGD’s Student Committee. That experience opened my eyes to just how impactful the RGD is, and before I knew it, I had dove headfirst into the role of Co-Chair for the Student Committee. That role was a game-changer for me, and it ultimately led me to where I am now as the Co-Chair of the Associate Committee and a Member of RGD’s Board of Directors.

Q: What contribution are you most proud of / What experience or memory stands out for you?

Leading the Student Committee was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had with the RGD. Advocating for students, amplifying their voices and helping create a space where they felt heard and supported was truly special. Even now, seeing the impact of that work continue beyond my time in the role makes me incredibly proud.

Q: What is the most surprising or unexpected thing about volunteering with the RGD?

I was honestly blown away by how welcoming and genuinely kind everyone in the RGD community is. There’s such a strong sense of humanity and generosity here. It’s not just another network; it’s a group of people who truly want to uplift and support one another.

Q: What have you learned about the industry since volunteering for the RGD?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s always more to learn. Every conversation, every connection and every event has been an opportunity to gain new perspectives. Sitting down and talking with people—hearing their stories, experiences and ways of thinking—is such a treat. More often than not, there’s a wealth of wisdom tucked into those moments, whether it’s an insight into design, a fresh perspective on creativity or even a different way of looking at the world. To me, it’s a reminder that the industry isn’t just built on talent and skill but on the exchange of ideas and the generosity of those willing to share them.

Q: Based on your experience volunteering with the RGD, how would you describe the organization's role in the industry?

I believe the RGD acts as a pillar in the Canadian design community. It allows designers to connect, advocate for each other and build spaces that wouldn’t exist otherwise. I feel like it’s more than just an organization; it’s a place that fosters collaboration, learning and a sense of belonging in the industry.

“Bella is exceptional in a lot of ways. Her commitment to excellence in design has already been recognized. However, I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight Bella's exceptional organizational skills, her exceptional attention to detail and her truly commendable ethos in advocating for the needs of emerging designers. I'm excited to see where Bella's career continues to develop, and I'm very fortunate to have her as my fellow Co-Chair.”

Q: What have you gained from being an RGD volunteer, and why would you recommend it to other Members who might be thinking of getting involved?

I truly stand by the saying, “You get what you put in,” which couldn’t be more true regarding the RGD. If you take the time to volunteer, engage with the community or even just show up to events, you’ll always walk away with something—whether that’s knowledge, friendships or new opportunities. For me, being part of this community has been incredibly rewarding. Still, more than anything, I’m deeply grateful for the chance to connect with many talented creatives, hear their stories and learn from their perspectives. Those conversations have shaped the way I see and approach design and, without them, I don’t think I would be the designer I am today.

Q: Do you have thoughts on what you might like to do as a volunteer with the RGD in the future?

I’d love to keep finding new ways to grow and strengthen our community by creating more spaces where people and their work can be seen, heard and celebrated on a bigger scale. Also, as someone from the West Coast, I’d love to help bring more of the RGD’s presence and impact to this side of the country!
