Volunteer of the Month: Andrea Rodriguez RGD
This December, the RGD thanks Andrea Rodriguez RGD for her contributions to the RGD community.
How long have you been volunteering with the RGD, and in what capacity?
I started volunteering with the RGD in 2018 shortly after becoming Certified. I was excited to connect with other designers and give back to the community. I began as a mentor and later started shadowing certification interviews, which I find incredibly rewarding. Volunteering has always felt meaningful to me because it's not about getting something in return, but about supporting fellow designers and strengthening the community I'm proud to be part of.
What experience or memory stands out for you?
A moment that really stands out happened at DesignThinkers this year. Someone approached me and said, "Hey, Andrea, I wanted to thank you for your guidance, in person." He was one of my first mentees, and hearing that meant so much. Encounters like this often happen, and each time they fill me with so much joy. Knowing that I've helped someone gain clarity or confidence in their career is incredibly fulfilling. A mentor isn't there to hand out answers, but to guide someone toward finding their own. Seeing that impact in real life is something I'm deeply proud of.
What is the most surprising or unexpected thing about volunteering with the RGD?
I initially thought volunteering would be straightforward: show up, help, and that's it. But I've been pleasantly surprised by how intentional and supportive the RGD is. They really pay attention to what volunteers care about. I love type, murals and colour and the RGD has always encouraged me to bring those interests forward through workshops, talks and community sessions. It feels like a genuinely supportive space where your strengths are welcomed.
“I had the pleasure of being a co-reviewer during certification evaluations and watching Andrea lead the most recent DesignThinkers workshop, and her presence is undeniable. Not only does she approach the association from a unique perspective being an artist on top of being a designer, she's also candid, opinionated and overall fun to listen to!”

What have you learned about the industry since volunteering for the RGD?
I've learned that connecting with other designers is just as important as having a strong portfolio. Being good at design is essential, but so is building relationships, learning from your peers and staying engaged with the community. That human connection is a significant part of thriving in this industry.
Based on your experience volunteering with the RGD, how would you describe the organization's role in the industry?
The RGD plays a vital role in advocating for designers and elevating the profession as a whole. They champion fair pay, ethical practices and proper recognition of our work. Their stance against spec work and unpaid work is so essential. I'm grateful for the way they organize and unify designers across Canada, ensuring our industry remains strong, respected and supported.
What have you gained from being an RGD volunteer, and why would you recommend it to other members who might be thinking of getting involved?
Volunteering has given me a deeper understanding of the industry and of myself as both a designer and a mentor. It's also helped me build confidence in my skills and in asking for help when I need it. The RGD community is incredibly generous and welcoming. I always tell mentees and designers I meet that you get out of any community what you put in. If you show up with a good attitude and a willingness to participate, you'll gain so much in return.
Do you have thoughts on what you might like to do as a volunteer with the RGD in the future?
I'd love to continue mentoring because it's one of my favourite ways to contribute. I also really enjoyed giving a workshop at DesignThinkers this year, and I'd like to explore doing more of that. I'm also interested in supporting students and emerging designers more closely, whether that's through portfolio nights or helping younger designers get their start in the field.
