Description

For the third presentation in RGD's Design Educators Series, Meredith will discuss the changing conditions for design practice, confusion about the nature of research, and why research is integral to the future of the discipline and the profession. It will address the need to develop predispositions toward research in undergraduate design students and the role of universities in an emerging research culture.

 

About Meredith Davis

Meredith is a Professor of Graphic Design and the Director of Graduate Programs in Graphic Design at NC State University College of Design.

She taught for 13 years at Virginia Commonwealth University and has been at NC State since 1989. She served 10 years as chair of the Department of Graphic Design (now the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design) and four years as head of the interdisciplinary PhD in Design program. She currently supervises doctoral students; teaches graduate courses in design and cognition, design education, and design studio; and teaches undergraduate courses in typography, design theory, and design studio.

Meredith is a fellow and the 2005 National Medalist of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. She currently serves on the AIGA Visionary Design Council to define "The Designer of 2015." She has received numerous teaching awards for graduate education, including four university awards as Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor and nominee for the Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence. She is also listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers and Who’s Who in American Art. Meredith was principal in the graphic design firm Communication Design from 1979-1989. She is the recipient of more than 50 national and international design awards and her work has appeared in Graphis, ID Magazine, Print, Graphic Design USA, ACD 100, Creativity, Typography, and other professional publications.
