Written by Samiksha Makhijani RGD, Zero Hash

This May, the RGD thanks Samiksha Makhijani RGD for her contributions to the RGD community.

Q: How long have you been volunteering with the RGD, and in what capacity?

I began my journey with RGD as a Student Member back in 2016, actively volunteering at various events. In 2023, I advanced to a more significant role by joining the XD Advisory Group, an initiative focused on experience design. I currently lead event planning and partnerships, working to attract key speakers and collaborating with the Mentorship Committee to ensure our activities are inclusive for UX Designers. Additionally, I contribute as a speaker and portfolio reviewer. In March, I presented at RGD Webinar on Storytelling in UX, sharing insights and practical techniques from my field.

You can read a recap of this session in the article "Storytelling in UX: Building compelling case studies"

Q: What contribution are you most proud of / What experience/memory stands out for you?

A memorable experience was attending my first RGD in-person event in January 2017. Despite travelling alone from Barrie to Toronto in cold, windy weather, the event marked a significant turning point for me. It introduced me to some of Canada’s leading designers and helped me form lasting connections. As an immigrant, this event was particularly transformative, as it played a key role in helping me integrate into the design community. Through the RGD, I was also connected with a mentor who has been instrumental in my career development, offering guidance and support that were pivotal to my transition into the UX industry.

“Samiksha is a true champion for our community– her willingness to take initiative, support others and share her expertise has played a key role in growing XD representation across the RGD this past year. We are grateful for her leadership and the positive energy she brings to every challenge!”

Q: What is the most surprising/unexpected thing about volunteering with the RGD?

The most surprising aspect of volunteering with the RGD is the sheer talent and humility of the Members. Our community is not only creative and knowledgeable but also incredibly gracious and supportive. Their dedication continually inspires me and it's a privilege to be part of such a vibrant group.

Q: What have you learned about the industry since volunteering for the RGD?

Volunteering with the RGD has deepened my understanding of ethical design standards and the importance of designing for good. It has served as a grounding force, reminding me to prioritize integrity in my work. Though I come from a UX background, interacting with various professionals within the RGD has broadened my perspective and deepened my knowledge across different design disciplines.

Q: Based on your experience volunteering with the RGD, how would you describe the organization's role in the industry?

The RGD plays a crucial role in nurturing young designers, bridging the gap between academic learning and industry demands. It provides a robust platform for networking, professional development and mentorship, which is crucial for anyone entering the design world. For many, including myself during my student days at Georgian College, the RGD has been a beacon for navigating career paths and enhancing professional skills.

Q: What have you gained from being an RGD volunteer, and why would you recommend it to other Members who might be thinking of getting involved?

Volunteering with the RGD has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to give back and support the growth of others, much like I was supported. One profound moment was when my mentor shared that "Mentorship is a two-way road. You might think you are the only one benefiting, but your commitment and dedication also inspire me." This insight has shaped my approach to mentoring, emphasizing the mutual benefits of this relationship. I encourage anyone considering volunteer work to seize the opportunity to contribute and learn within this vibrant community.

Q: Do you have thoughts on what you might like to do as a volunteer with the RGD in the future?

Looking ahead, I aim to position the RGD as a comprehensive platform for designers in Canada and globally, enabling them to network, learn and find inspiration. My focus will be on increasing UX presence through strategic partnerships, innovative events and comprehensive learning resources, striving to make our community more inclusive for designers across all disciplines.
