This project targeted a wide audience of young adults to older individuals (ages 19–65) through a packaging redesign aimed at refreshing a local Okanagan winery and attracting younger consumers. Drawing from the winery’s unconventional history—once a laundromat with a secret brothel in the basement—the design incorporates themes of secrecy, intrigue and playfulness. Red was chosen as the dominant colour to evoke mystery, love and potential scandal. Label patterns were inspired by tasting notes, featuring abstract red illustrations of fruit with a hidden blue layer subtly peeking through. A transparent red tag, designed to resemble an old laundromat tag, conceals the decorative illustrations and reveals lingerie beneath—adding a cheeky twist that nods to the brand’s origins. This layered approach blends heritage with bold, contemporary design, creating packaging that is both fun and provocative while respecting the winery’s story. The result is a refreshed identity that intrigues, excites and appeals across generations.

Winning Projects (Tie): Tōng Bǎo Mooncake Packaging by Louis Yau Student RGD
Award Sponsor: SLD; School: Capilano University, North Vancouver, BC; Educator support: Dominique Walker
This project is intended for Western audiences unfamiliar with Chinese culture and second-generation Chinese individuals who may feel distanced from traditional customs. The packaging is designed to spark curiosity among newcomers while offering pride and familiarity to those reconnecting with heritage. The goal was to present Chinese culture in a way that feels modern, engaging and approachable without diluting the significance of its traditions. Centred on the legend of Chang’e and Hou Yi, the design uses illustration to guide audiences through visual storytelling, with the narrative revealed across layers of the unboxing experience. Each mooncake box represents one of the nine suns Hou Yi shot down, linking the form to the story. In keeping with festival traditions of games and riddles, each box also features a riddle on the side, with the answer revealed upon lifting the cover, adding a playful and interactive element to the cultural experience.
