Award Sponsor: Artista; School: Humber Polytechnic, Toronto, ON; Educator Support: Leanna Palmer
The Principles of Design as The Four Humours is a poster series that was created to teach first-year students and beginner graphic designers about the CARP Principles of Design—contrast, alignment, repetition and proximity. The design incorporates an underlying theme, The Four Humours, to create a distinct visual profile for each poster, resulting in an engaging mnemonic device that merges imagery, narrative, colour and emotion.

Extensive research into the Four Humours informed the project, revealing associations with organs, seasons, colours, elements, emotions and ages. Each CARP principle was paired with one humour, then matched to a historic painting chosen for its ability to reflect both the assigned design principle and humour. Composition, background colour and accompanying narrative copy work together to reinforce these connections. The final series integrates thorns along the top and bottom as a continuous visual element, referencing religious iconography while emphasizing horizontal presentation. Together, the posters balance function and symbolism, transforming principles of design into memorable, visually rich lessons.
