Discover how Scotiabank transformed the business need for a new mobile app into an opportunity to build a design-led culture of accessibility and inclusion in digital banking. The session will focus on Scotiabank’s journey to foster a culture of accessibility across digital product design. Monica digs into the strategic building blocks of a digital accessibility program and the role of designers in translating accessibility theory (and WCAG) into practice.
Presenter: Monica Ackermann, Director of Enterprise Accessibility at Scotiabank
Monica and her team ensure that accessible design and development are at the foundation of digital banking. Monica has a passion for creating accessible digital spaces and for the inclusion of people with disabilities in society. She is a Professional Engineer and has Master’s Degree in Critical Disability Studies from York University. Advocating for the rights of people with disabilities is at the core of her career and she has opportunities to do this work with ARCH Disability Law Centre in Canada and with Disability Rights Promotion International in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Hugo Mejia, PRODUCT DESIGN DIRECTOR
Hugo led the design of digital experiences for Scotiabank at the Caribbean and Central America Digital Factory, with a mandate to transform a fragmented and complex banking experience through simplification and reuse of products, frameworks, and experiences from other regions. He now leads the design of authenticated web experiences with a focus on the modernization of our banking platform.
Nelson Moutinho, PRODUCT DESIGN DIRECTOR
Nelson works with and leads a strong group of extremely talented designers to reimagine financial services in retail banking. He’s passionate about delivering products with great design, user experience, and customer and business value.
