Volunteer of the Month: Caroline Bruckner RGD

This March, the RGD thanks Caroline Bruckner RGD for her contributions to our community.

Q: How long have you been volunteering with RGD, and in what capacity?

I've been involved with various volunteer roles within RGD for over 10 years now. I've done different things including serving on the Certification Committee, doing portfolio reviews, speaking/being a panelist at RGD events/webinars and being a part of Designers+Drinks+Discussion.
 

Q: What made you want to get involved with RGD?

I remember the early days of my career before RGD was founded. Back then, it was a lot harder to network. I wasn't seeing a united front against practices like spec work and it wasn't easy to connect with other designers or find mentors. RGD has done so much to advocate for design since then, and is made up of so many amazing, vibrant people. I always find it inspiring to connect with others in the design community and it's great to be able to give something back.

Q: Of the RGD initiatives you have contributed to, what are you most proud of?

I think my greatest contribution while volunteering was serving on the Certification Committee, where I contributed to regular Board meetings and had the pleasure of being a portfolio review panelist as part of RGD's Certification Process. The Certification Process is integral to the RGD organization and I helped it's development as a sophisticated asset for the design community at large. A lot of careful consideration has gone into developing the Process which is unique and unmatched anywhere in the world. It was an honour to be a part of shaping the Process, which in turn shapes the Membership of the Association.

Q: What is your most memorable experience as an RGD volunteer?

I was given the opportunity to speak at an RGD event in Kingston. Having this opportunity really pushed me to develop my presenting skills and get comfortable standing up in front of a crowd. The people I was seated with that day I remain in contact with today. 

Q: What have you gained from being an RGD volunteer, and why would you recommend it to other members who might be thinking of getting involved?

I have grown personally and professionally as a direct result of volunteer opportunities provided by RGD. I don't think I would be where I am in my career if it wasn't for the many different activities I have participated in. If you are thinking of getting involved in some way, go for it! Push yourself out of your comfort zone and take on a new challenge with RGD. It's a great way to grow.
