Designing Paths: Giovanni Ferretti shares his story as an immigrant designer

Written by Giovanni Ferretti Associate RGD, Onefluent Inc.

Giovanni Ferretti Associate RGD, a graphic designer from Italy, shares his journey moving to Canada, inspired by its thriving arts and design scene and with a dream of experiencing life in a bustling metropolis like Toronto.

What prompted your move to Canada?

My perspective was different despite being from Italy, where one might assume a strong connection to Italian design. While I draw inspiration from esteemed Italian designers like Massimo Vignelli, Italo Lupi and Achille Castiglioni, my interests have long been drawn to North American culture—its music, design, and arts have always fascinated me. Growing up in Termoli, Italy, my educational focus was on mathematics, a field quite different from the creative arts. However, my curiosity for North American culture, especially its vibrant music and rich arts scene, inspired my dream of living in bustling Toronto. This desire ultimately motivated me to pursue a career in design upon arriving in Canada, where its influence continues to shape my approach.

What were your initial experiences when you moved to Canada?

In 2016, my journey began at an international language school in Toronto. Those initial months were pivotal as I immersed myself in the language and culture of Canada. Being an English student first allowed me to deeply engage with the vibrant cultural landscape before entering the professional realm. Connecting with fellow international students, teachers and mentors laid a strong foundation for my further education and career aspirations. Despite the challenges of transition, I felt fortunate for the support of my family, who encouraged me to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly. After initially settling in Toronto, I moved to Calgary for career opportunities, which marked a significant milestone in my journey. Each step reinforced my adaptability and resilience, qualities essential in the design industry.

What was key to your success as an international student in Canada?

Remaining humble and being open to learning were crucial. I had no preconceived notions and approached each day as an opportunity to absorb knowledge and grow. Seeking teacher feedback and exploring various aspects of media communication and technology helped me gain confidence in my craft. Additionally, the supportive environment at the school and later within the design community in Canada provided essential networks and resources that facilitated my professional growth in Canada.

What do you credit for your success as a professional?

It's not just one factor but a combination—my continuous desire to evolve, explore new ideas and challenge myself. Becoming part of the RGD community boosted my confidence and provided mentorship opportunities. Engaging with fellow designers and understanding industry standards were pivotal in my journey. Additionally, the experiences and challenges I faced early in my career, from transitioning from a mathematical background to design and navigating different cultural and professional landscapes, contributed significantly to my growth as a designer.

How did you become involved as a mentor and judge for RGD?

My journey into mentoring and judging for the RGD began with my initial involvement in the community after becoming an Associate RGD in 2020. As I immersed myself in the RGD community, I found it to be a supportive and enriching environment that provides professional development opportunities and fosters a deep sense of belonging. The invitation to be one of the judges for the RGD Student Awards in 2024 was a natural progression of my involvement and commitment to the community. It was an honour to contribute my insights and experience, guiding emerging designers and students as they navigate their own paths in the design industry.

What advice would you give to newcomers?

Never stop evolving. Graduation isn't the endpoint—it's just the beginning. Stay proactive, seek volunteer opportunities (I recommend Global Nomadic and Artbound Foundation for those in Toronto), and immerse yourself in the community. Stay humble, positive and open to learning from every experience. Building a strong network and seeking mentorship early on can make a significant difference in your professional journey. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow and learn.
