Design Is Yummy redesigns Niskamoon's website as a tool its own team can manage
For more than 20 years, Niskamoon Corporation has worked alongside Cree land users and beneficiaries to address the impacts of hydroelectric development across the nine Cree communities of Eeyou Istchee. Through its programs, resources and initiatives, Niskamoon supports traditional ways of life while fostering partnerships that strengthen community well-being.
As the organization grew, its website became increasingly difficult for the Niskamoon team to manage and update. Important information wasn't always making it online, making it harder for visitors to access current resources, opportunities and updates.
Design Is Yummy redesigned the website to make information clearer, more accessible and easier for the team to manage—helping Niskamoon better communicate its ongoing and upcoming work. The goal was more than a visual refresh: the new site needed to be a practical, flexible tool for communication and information sharing, while supporting Niskamoon's continued growth.
A major part of the process was making sense of Niskamoon's extensive content and restructuring it around how people actually use the site. Design Is Yummy worked closely with the Niskamoon team to understand how information was shared, what visitors needed to find most often and how the organization's evolving programs would shape the website over time. This collaborative process informed a new content structure that brings related information together and creates clearer pathways through the site. Annual reports dating back to Niskamoon's founding, publications, resources, funding opportunities, submission deadlines, events and announcements are now organized within a more intuitive system.
Flexibility was also central to the approach. Because Niskamoon's content is constantly evolving, Design Is Yummy integrated a content management system to allow the internal team to easily add, edit and organize content independently. The result is a website designed to work on both sides: a clearer, more intuitive experience for visitors and a practical, manageable tool that gives the Niskamoon team greater control over.
The website needed to work for two distinct audiences: community members looking for clear, accessible information and the Niskamoon team responsible for managing a growing amount of content. This became a key consideration throughout the project, influencing everything from how information was organized and labelled to how users move through the site.
Close collaboration with the Niskamoon team was key to understanding how information is created, shared and updated across the organization. Through ongoing conversations and feedback, Design Is Yummy was able to identify the team's needs and build a website that supports their day-to-day workflows. This collaboration helped shape both the user experience and the functionality that drives the site.
