Miles on the Brush / Book Design

This book is meant to evoke the several watercolours they produced during their stay and exploration of the island. With the smear of paint on the cover, red band and several inserts, the book’s concept suggests that it was with them while they were working on the island, and even includes a custom-designed map of Fogo, tucked away inside.

The book is designed in two sections, both section featuring each journey with a half page divider to start the journey. To end nicely the book, a five columns grid interview is use with flexibility, with text and images extending across them.

Upon turning the unembellished cover, the reader is struck by the visual impact of the dynamic, exciting endpapers, and the art plates command attention on a separate stock. Beautiful layouts throughout indicate a deep grasp of the text structure, while the back matter manages to be both interesting and tasteful.

“Art and design. My love for the visual arts and my interest in pop culture is longstanding. Growing up with a fascination for the visual arts and discovering commercial art while studying fine arts at university made me realize that becoming a designer was my true purpose. Design is part of who I am. It is what I am most passionate about.”

The main challenge was to design something non-linear, but at the same time, comprehensible. The format had to be small, like a notebook, to make it feel more realistic when the visitor went through the exhibition with it. The book was a literal and conceptual travel journal of the exhibition that recorded “memories” for each work on view.

I designed the cover as a 4-panel gatefold, with the same artwork featured on 5 sides. This resulted in the catalogue having two spines. As the catalogue is bilingual, I considered having one spine for the English title and one for the French.

“Design. I’m a designer because I find value in what I do. Design is a balance between problem-solving, strategy, logic, and creativity. I am constantly innovating, learning, exploring new ideas, and experimenting with different forms of design. Art and design are a big part of my life, and one can’t come without the other.”

Our Stories / Exhibit Design

The strategy was to orient visitors to art in Canada and to engage them through hands-on activities. The design moved visitors through sections where they could learn how artworks in various media are made, where they could understand the regional and cultural diversity of art in Canada, and share their own creativity through digital activities.

A way out of the mirror / Book Design

The design of the book was based on a children’s storybook that tells a tale through images. The main character is a praying mantis, understood as a self-portrait of the artist as a young man. The book was packaged in a Tyvek pink envelope, chosen for its outstanding water resistance to both complement and withstand Farmer’s sculptural waterworks.

It was essential that the design of the book be sympathetic to the work of this contemporary artist. The halftone dot was chosen as an approach for the cover as this technique has been one constant in the artist’s multifaceted career. The colour sleeve was incorporated as a way to reference the many layers in this artist’s practice.
