Ruth uses her creative talents to inform and delight at the City of Côte Saint-Luc (a municipality in the West End of Montreal), where she has worked for over 20 years as their in-house graphic designer. She has a special passion for print design. Fishtank Communications, her independent studio, focuses on clients within the arts and non-profit sectors. As a current member of RGD’s Membership Committee, she helmed the Virtual Communities initiative. She also served on the Events Committee and has judged student competitions.

Côte Saint-Luc Public Library—Chaos Lecture Series Poster

A history professor was giving a series of lectures at the library about the chaotic nature of modern-day politics and the introduction of social media to the mix. I focused on the aspect of anger by using a twisted version of the Twitter logo holding a megaphone. The typeface and background reflect the rough, urgent nature of political activism.

I worked closely with my client on this trade show booth design to promote his various water purification products. The client told me that people actually stopped and made a point of saying how much they liked the booth design and how much it stood apart from the surrounding visual clutter. He connected with many new potential clients.

Côte Saint-Luc Inside Out is a magazine sent out to every resident a few times a year, replacing previous publication, The Courier, published as a typical broadsheet. A resident left some wonderful feedback on social media: This is a must keep copy. I hope every resident reads it from cover to cover and is prepared for emergencies! Well done!

For their 2016 Christmas concert, the Orpheus Singers chose a repertoire of Renaissance English composers, with a focus on William Byrd. Rather than going with the usual conservative style for the poster, we used a visual pun of a bird sporting a ruff from the era. Due to its popularity, we kept the cheeky style for their 2019 concert.

The City wanted to promote the new black bins for the residents who were to soon have them delivered to their doors. Sometimes flyers go straight to the recycling bin, so we used bright, contrasting colours to attract citizens' attention. We received great feedback from a resident on social media about how easy to understand the flyer was.

The aim of this design was to bring purified spring water to the dinner table in style…high class with rustic elements. My client was entering his purified water into competition and wanted a label design to pursue the idea of marketing the water for sale in stores. The water went on to win two awards, which have been incorporated onto the label.

The Côte Saint-Luc Public Library needed a poster to promote a concert by the Molinari Quartet. Named after the artist Guido Molinari, the quartet provided a group photo in front of one of his works. I expanded the artwork and used his signature style of geometric bars of colour for an eye-catching poster. Designed for the City of Côte Saint-Luc.
