Winning Project (Tie): Malaise Magazine by Hannah Palmier Blizzard Student RGD

School: York University, Toronto, ON; Educator Support: Emery Norton

Malaise is a heart ill at ease, a quiet murmur of discontent within contemporary life. This submission-based magazine aims to capture the subtle melancholic nuances of existence through art and storytelling. A cohesive editorial framework was created to achieve this, allowing each content type to shine. A unique running head was designed, followed by tailored typography and colour palettes for each spread, whether an article, poem, photographer highlight or review. This approach maintains a consistent visual theme while exploring the distinct characteristics of each content type.

Winning Project (Tie): Salt and Wounds by Melody Chen

School: York University, Toronto, ON

The publication ‘Salt and Wounds’ features the Kyiv rave scene juxtaposed with the suffering experienced by the people of Ukraine during periods of conflict. Through the binding of fragile rice paper with staples, the materiality mirrors the wounds endured by individuals. The pages explore how people escape into rave culture while living in a war-torn society. This project highlights the connection between underground culture and alternative music and aims to show the vulnerability of people in these scenes.
