Design Drawing: Renewed Potential in Design Education

About this video
Description
Drawing can be a powerful tool for designers on many levels, yet it seemingly occupies a diminished role in the current teaching of graphic design. In this webinar, designer, author and educator Timothy Samara will discuss the relevance of drawing in contemporary education and practice, stressing its importance as a design process for fundamental skill development and ideation. Far beyond the notion of historically academic pictorial realism or illustration, the discussion will assume a broad definition of drawing that encompasses iconography, symbolism, diagramming, non-pictorial representation, and typography.
Alongside examples of professional and student drawing-based design work, Mr. Samara will describe strategies for effectively integrating drawing into existing curriculums, crossing the divide between hand-generated and digital design environments, and implementing drawing as a core curricular component of developing educational programs.
About Timothy Samara
New York-based graphic designer Timothy Samara began drawing at an early age, leading him to pursue graphic design at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he graduated a Trustee Scholar in 1990. His 22-year career has so far focused on visual brand identity, communication design, and typography. Since 2000, he has split his time between professional practice and building a highly-respected academic reputation at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons/The New School for Design, Purchase College, New York University, The University of the Arts, and Fashion Institute of Technology. "Drawing for Graphic Design," released in June, is the most recent of his eight books (all from Rockport Publishers), which have been translated into ten languages and are used by students and practitioners around the world.
