Volunteer of the Month: Sheree Stephenson RGD
Interview with Sheree Stephenson RGD, Sheree Stephenson DesignThis October, we thank Sheree Stephenson RGD for her contribution to the RGD community.
How long have you been volunteering with the RGD, and in what capacity?
I have been volunteering with the RGD for two years. I started as a Virtual Community leader, and now I am a part of the Membership Committee. I've really enjoyed leading the Community for Solo Designers. It has been rewarding getting to know everyone and supporting the other Communities.
What contribution are you most proud of / What experience/memory stands out for you?
One of the highlights for me was organizing an in-person get-together for Members of the Solo Designers group at the last DesignThinkers Conference in Toronto. I am planning another one this yearI am also really interested to see how all of these groups develop and grow.
What is the most surprising/unexpected thing about volunteering with the RGD?
I'm inspired by how many designers across the country who volunteer their time and abilities to make the RGD what it is—a place where folks can find support and community.
What have you learned about the industry since volunteering for the RGD?
While volunteering for the RGD, I have realized that designers in Canada are supportive and generous with each other. They give their time and energy to mentor, support and have conversations about our industry. We are all much more connected than I realized.
Based on your experience volunteering with the RGD, how would you describe the organization's role in the industry?
The RGD is not JUST about community, and learning opportunities, but also about advocacy. I've been really delighted to see the role that the RGD has taken in speaking out against spec work. Coming together on issues like that really makes our industry better for everyone.
What have you gained from being an RGD volunteer, and why would you recommend it to other members who might be thinking of getting involved?
I think that putting yourself out there to create the changes you want to see is incredibly rewarding. It can be easy to get lost in the day-to-day routine of our work lives. Volunteering with the RGD has given me a new perspective on our work and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful changes in our field. And everyone is so welcoming and generous!
Do you have thoughts on what you might like to do as a volunteer with the RGD in the future?
I'm excited to continue to build on the Virtual Communities. The Events Committee also seems like a good next step!
