Award for First-Year Students
Award Sponsor: Artista Design
Winner: Charlotte White
Winning Project: Coraline
Award Sponsor: Artista Design; School: Capilano University, North Vancouver, BC
This poster reimagines the film Coraline in a style deliberately different from its animated source material, foregrounding the vibrancy and sinister undercurrent of the story’s “other world.” The composition places the titular character inside the mouth of the film’s villain, making literal both the villain’s figurative consuming love and her literal desire to consume Coraline, while a long thread running from Coraline’s arm to the edge of the canvas evokes her unravelling — a nod to the dolls the villain makes throughout the film and to Coraline’s own shifting sense of self. Built for anyone who has watched and loved Coraline, the poster distills the film’s core themes of consuming love, abandonment and identity into a single, striking image.
