Dance Victoria
Integrated Award Winner – Branding Program
Becoming Design Office
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Dance Victoria, one of Canada’s foremost dance presenters, engaged Becoming to lead a positioning and rebrand for its 30th anniversary season. The work had to honour three decades of familiarity while repositioning a celebrated local champion as an international destination brand. Audiences span longstanding patrons, a growing young following, national funders and international partners. Strategy research surfaced a defining distinction. Dance Victoria is a platform for creativity rather than a creative vessel.
That insight led to the line. In dance, a line describes a dancer’s posture, angles and extensions. In design, it is the most fundamental mark of expression. A generative system translates dancer movement into lines that move asynchronously in shared rhythm. The custom logotype carries the same idea, its exaggerated apexes making the letterforms read as though drawn from lines. Early in the process, the board described dance as magic. Seeing the lines in motion, the client compared the feeling to watching live dance for the first time. That response set the benchmark. The result is not a set of assets, but a system built to carry that magic through 30 more years.
