About Presentation
Becoming the Blue Sky City — Cities, much like individuals, must allow their identities to evolve as they grow, change and adapt to the world around them. In 2024, Calgary reimagined its identity, broadening its image from that of Cowboys and Oil & Gas, which it had held on to for the better part of a century, to something far more inclusive and reflective of the city's vibrance and diversity. A change of this magnitude is bound to see some internal friction along the way. In this presentation, Scott leads yo through some of the thinking and creative process behind Blue Sky City. He provides insights into how the team navigated a tricky environment of city stakeholders, leading to widespread support of the work through the ranks and civic partners.
About Scott Wilson
Scott currently works as Design Director at Daughter in Calgary. Growing up in a 1990s small town in New Zealand, Scott stumbled into design unexpectedly but truly, madly and, of course, deeply. This led him to downtown Wellington, where he studied at Toi Rauwhārangi Massey College of Creative Arts. He then moved on to Auckland, where he began his career with clients ranging from KFC and Bank of New Zealand to the country’s largest waste management provider. Seeking a change in climate and international shipping prices, Scott touched down in Canada, where he spent his first year in Montréal, working for a few big names like IBM, Couché Tard (Circle K/Macs) and Protegéz Vouz. In 2020, Scott realized West really is Best and headed for Calgary, joining Daughter, having since picked up over 30 international and national awards for his work. Scott brings with him an international and multi-disciplined perspective, an eagle eye for typography and a relentless-bordering-on-desperate search for the big idea.
