Volunteer of the Month: Robert Smith RGD

Interview with Robert Smith RGD, Greenmelon Inc

This March, the RGD thanks RGD Founder Robert Smith RGD for his contributions to our community.

Q: How long have you been volunteering with RGD, and in what capacity?

I have been with RGD since the beginning. I am one of the founders and before that I was a national board member and Ottawa president of the GDC. Basically, all of my career. I have had the opportunity to sit on the Board, be a mentor, speak at student events and most recently speak and MC at DesignThinkers. It has been a wonderful ride!

Q: What made you want to get involved with RGD?

Initially I got involved with the group as a student for networking and career development. This proved to be essential to my growth as a designer. Now it is about giving back. I am a passionate designer and appreciate what I have every day and want others to have similar opportunities.

Q: Of the RGD initiatives you have contributed to, what are you most proud of?

I am most proud of seeing how great RGD has become. Being there day one, I have seen extraordinary growth of both the Association and the industry.

Q: What is your most memorable experience as an RGD volunteer?

There are so many but there are two that stand out. The first is seeing our charter pass in the Ontario legislature. The second is being a Speaker at DesignThinkers in 2017. Both are career highlights and I appreciate the opportunities that have been provided to me by RGD.

Q: What have you gained from being an RGD volunteer, and why would you recommend it to other Members who might be thinking of getting involved?

RGD has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. It has given me confidence, it has educated me and it has given me opportunities. It has made me the designer that I am today, without a doubt.
