Top 5 Applications of AI Augmenting Creativity
Written by Susan Yang RGD, Padometric Studio
The future of design is changing with the growing inclusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the design process. It’s valuable to learn and make use of AI to disrupt ourselves and keep an explorative attitude.
AI allows computers and machines to perform tasks that mimic human intelligence such as visual perception, problem-solving, speech recognition and language translation. Sub-branches of AIinclude Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) which involve algorithms as applications that can be trained or self-taught based on more data.
AI does not replace human creativity but brings new relationships to bridge the gap between user experience and technological capabilities. Designers can co-create with AI for optimization and speed. AI provides the framework for tailoring dynamic individual personalization, automating the parsing of vast amounts of data to identify commonalities and generating multiple variations in an instant. With this co-relationship, designers can focus on the creative and strategic concepts instead of the time-consuming or tedious tasks. AI helps augment and accelerate the design process allowing the designer to focus on the more rewarding work. As part of this relationship, this provides designers an avenue to learn, evolve and shift into new hybrid roles that are elevating the profession.
Netflix

Netflix, the world’s largest subscription-based streaming service, uses AI to help create an engaging customer journey. The company deploys AI solutions such as delivering personalized recommendations and auto generating personalized image thumbnails/artwork in different languages based on the locations of the customers.
Salesforce Einstein Designer

Salesforce, known for their online solution for customer relationship management (CRM), created Einstein Designer, an AI tool which is trained to learn a brand’s design system and generate tailored variations within the brand’s style to deliver personalized digital experiences. The AI tool helps automate and scale personalized design by enabling a more data-driven approach.
Adobe Sensei

Adobe Sensei is Adobe’s AI and machine learning technology that provides designers with an assistant that takes on the non-creative parts of the design process. Adobe Sensei helps automate repetitive and time-consuming tasks such as visual searches with content intelligence, blending together of images and automatically adjusting aspect ratios for different digital media platforms and achieving photorealistic effects. Adobe Sensei amplifies human creativity by helping designers to work more productively.
IBM Watson

IBM Watson is a cognitive technology that processes information in a human way, understands and interacts in the natural language, learns from the interactions and is trained based on new content. Designers can use IBM Watson to augment their creative process to deliver personalized user experiences and conversations such as for websites, advertising campaigns and digital apps.
Microsoft Seeing AI

Microsoft’s accessibility mission focuses on inclusive design which includes the use of AI to bridge the gap between user needs and access to technology. Seeing AI is an iOS app that leverages AI technology with inclusive design to help people who are blind or with low vision to narrate the world around them. This includes object and scene recognition helping users to independently accomplish daily tasks.
