RGD releases No Spec email template for designers

The RGD has released a new No Spec email template to support designers in responding to organizations that request unpaid or speculative design work.

Spec work—whether in the form of contests, design competitions, RFP submissions without payment or job application assignments—continues to appear across the industry despite being widely condemned as an unethical business practice that devalues the design profession.

This new template provides designers with clear, direct language to advocate against spec work and explain why it harms both designers and the organizations that solicit it. Members can adapt the message to address design competitions or any situation where creative work is requested without proper compensation.

This resource was developed following recent correspondence between the RGD and the German Embassy regarding their logo design competition, which required entrants to submit original work on spec. Although the organizers did not listen to the RGD’s or other design community feedback, and stated that they would proceed with the competition without amendments, the situation underscored the ongoing need for collective advocacy and accessible tools that help designers push back.

The template also includes guidance on how to report spec work requests and invites community members to share their own letters to support others.
