Insights from the 'Spotlight on Dutch Design' Webinar

Presented by Peter Bil'ak, Liza Enebeis, Margot Gabel and Sebastiaan Scheer. Moderated by Will Novosedlik.

The RGD and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands recently invited four renowned Dutch designers to talk about what makes Dutch design unique and innovative. Below, we share some insights that reflect the essence of Dutch culture and its influence on design.

"I started to look around me and thought what makes Dutch design so unique? And, one of the first things you'll notice if you visit our country is that everything is design." — Margot Gabel, Lead Designer at Build in Amsterdam

"Traditionally, we love structure, clarity and an unconventional approach regardless of the result of the end product." — Sebastiaan Scheer, Head of Design at MediaMonks

"You have to understand the best interests and motives of other people and that is really also the core when it comes to innovation and design in the Netherlands. It is really this collaboration and the openness that has been ingrained in the nature and mentality of the Dutch and also extends to the people who move to the Netherlands." — Liza Enebeis, Creative Director at Studio Dumbar

There is something that the size of the country makes you realize. It makes you aware that you're not the centre of the world. And that's why my education has been from looking outside, by learning not only from inside of the Netherlands, but from really paying attention to what's happening outside. When one comes from a small country, you feel like you're part of something larger."  Peter Biľak, Founder of Typotheque

"The minute you exchange ideas, you can actually create something new." — Liza Enebeis, Creative Director at Studio Dumbar

"Being straightforward and openminded is a recognizable Dutch characteristic that helps us focus on critical elements. Direct design entails sacrificing fluff to provide an experience that is focused on functionality and purpose." — Sebastiaan Scheer, Head of Design at MediaMonks

The webinar was moderated by Will Novosedlik

“The Netherlands is known for its innovative design. These four graphic and visual designers, even though not all Dutch from origin, have incorporated the essence of Dutch design in their work: surprising concepts to address complex issues that inspire and incite action. In the core, design is a creative tool to tackle practical and current problems. We are pleased that the RGD has put the spotlight on that solution-driven Dutch approach in its latest webinar,” says Anne Le Guellec, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Toronto
