5. Responsibilities to cultures

5.1 Rules

5.1.1 I will respect and honour the ownership and intellectual property and associated rights, including moral rights of other cultures and identities, including Indigenous peoples, to their cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and/or faith-based cultural expressions.

5.1.2 When using design elements that belong to Indigenous peoples, and other cultures, faith communities and identities:

  • I will seek free and prior informed consent by engaging with interested parties, cultural custodians and knowledge keepers.
  • I will respectfully involve appropriate interested parties, cultural custodians and knowledge keepers in the design process and development of the final product.
  • I will ensure that Indigenous peoples, and other cultures and identities, share in the benefits of their cultural heritage, including financial benefits, especially when it is being commercially applied.
  • I will acknowledge its origins and give attribution.

5.1.3 I will recognize and respect the worldviews and lived experiences of other cultures, faith communities and identities, including Indigenous peoples, by considering power imbalances and ensuring an inclusive space free of racism and discrimination, where people feel safe.

5.2 Best Practices

5.2.1 I will establish a diversity review process to stem the spread of cultural stereotypes in creative work and ensure offensive or culturally insensitive work is never produced by myself or my team.

5.2.1 I will educate my clients and ensure that they are informed about the issues surrounding cultural appropriation.
