RGD announces the recipients of our 2012 Student Awards
TTC Creative Award for Northern Ontario Winner: Scott Savarie, Cambrian College
Winning Project: Handmade Branding
Scott wanted to convey the level of thought, struggle and dedication it takes to be a designer, contrary to popular belief that designing is “easy”. He illustrated the effort involved in the design process by comparing it to the creation of “handmade” goods.

50 Carleton Award for Northern Ontario Winner: Matthew Lehtela, Cambrian College
Winning Project: Icelandair Identity
Targeting travellers looking for transatlantic flights from North America to Iceland and Europe, Matthew created a logo intended to convey comfort, uniqueness, and the Icelandic landscape. The logo is a stylized “ia” for Icelandair.

Gordongroup Marketing + Communications Award for Eastern Ontario Winner: Mohammad Mozafarian, Algonquin College
Winning Project: Get Cracking Canada Packaging
The idea behind this package design was to create an attractive, educational and unique promotional package for Get Cracking Canada. The container wraps around ordinary egg cartons, giving the illusion that a chicken is sitting on the eggs.

Cinnamon Toast Award for Eastern Ontario Winner: Alexandra Tanner, Durham College
Winning Project: Elysium & Paradise Packaging
Elysium & Paradise is a fictional high-end line of soap products. The main objective in executing this project was to create packaging that serves a purpose, but is also so beautiful that it doesn’t need to be wrapped.

Quarry Communications Award for Western Ontario Winner: Megan Lewis, Conestoga College
Winning Project: Font Collective Direct Mailer
Font Collective is a mailer advertising a new website where fonts are available for purchase. The novelty mailer includes three typographic prints with a calendar on the reverse side. The prints can be kept and framed—an ongoing reminder of what Font Collective has to offer.

Hagon Award for Western Ontario Winner: Shenelle Pankratz, Conestoga College
Winning Project: Homesickness Package Design
How do you package and design for a non-tangible artifact—whether an idea, emotion or thought? The objective of this project was to create a package for the concept of homesickness. The focus is to persuade consumers to desire the non-existent product inside.

Forge Design Award for GTA Winner: Antonio Lennert, OCADU
Winning Project: Saudade Book Design
Saudade is a series of books developed from interviews with young Brazilians who have experienced self-exile. The books function similarly to a diary whereby a stream of conscious writing is presented. The best parts of each interview were translated and intertwined with the original Portuguese text.

TAXI Award for GTA Winner: Petra Cuschieri, George Brown College
Winning Project: Salerno Lake Logo
Petra met the client’s requirement for a flexible set of logos to be used in multiple applications by designing two multipurpose versions and two event-specific versions. The fish hook detail and colour scheme reference nature. The one colour application of each logo makes it practical for screen-printing purposes.

Q30 Design Award for Branding Winner: Petra Cuschieri, George Brown College
Winning Project: Cuff & Collar Branding
The intention of this project was to rebrand and repurpose a 30-year-old alterations shop, restoring value to a seemingly obsolete service and preserving a dying trade and the tradition behind it. The logo design references a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a sense of history. The trade itself is represented in the production of didactic tools, including a set of posters that teach sewing skills.

Shikatani Lacroix Award for Packaging Winner: Qiannan Zhao, George Brown College
Winning Project: Riceland Packaging
The Riceland product line is intended to raise awareness of the unfair trading system of rice in Asia. Riceland’s products are made almost entirely from cotton. The line includes a process book that introduces the brand and explains the design process.

Entro Award for Information Design Winner: Karen Lin Thorsley, George Brown College
Winning Project: Beta Life
Beta Life proposes that the use of digital technology in moderation is crucial. Beta Life is a self-help system that provides a means of analyzing one’s digital behaviour, improving this behaviour in a step-by-step program and maintaining a balanced approach to using digital technology.

Bell Media Award for Motion Graphics Winner: Nicholas Padadimitriou, York/Sheridan
Winning Project: Buzzing Vimeo.com/40465730
BUZZIN is a promotional spot for Canadian DJ OVERWERK’s single. The animation of a buzzing boombox that emits elementary shapes into the physical characters of the title track with intense movement reflects the euphoric environment in which OVERWERK’s music is experienced.

Riordon Design Award for Typography Winner: Daniel Kim and Michelle Liando, OCADU
Winning Project: Material Art And Design Catalogue
This catalogue is a showcase of work done by students within the Jewellery and Fibre departments at OCADU. To differentiate each department while retaining a sense of unity, Daniel produced a recto-verso book, with a foreword and essay in the middle of the book, printed on different stock.

Lucidia Award for Web/New Media Winner: Earvin Fanfair, Durham College
Winning Project: Swiftblob Magazine
Swiftblob is an online magazine focusing on businesses that are propelling new innovations forward in the areas of design, investments and more. Swiftblob aims to empower its readers by engaging them in social issues that can be effectively solved by technology.

Critical Mass Award for Web Design Winner: Steven Tiao, George Brown College
Winning Project: 40HRS.CA
40hrs.ca is a website aimed to enrich the TDSB Volunteer Program student experience. The website serves as a digital alternative, with a goal to match students with suitable volunteer opportunities to help them make appropriate decisions when choosing their post-secondary path.
